Job Description

The Role: Controller

Location: Austin, TX (Hybrid Schedule 1 or 2 days in office)

The Company

From the beginning, they have been dedicated to creating high-quality, affordable living environments and building strong, thriving neighborhoods. Our client’s mission is rooted in serving residents, supporting partners, and strengthening communities.

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Controller to lead and actively participate in the financial operations of the multifamily housing portfolio. Unlike a purely oversight role, this position requires a hands-on leader who is ready to directly engage in accounting processes, investor reporting, and audit preparation.

The Controller will supervise a team of 10 Financial Administrators while also personally managing property-level books to fully understand workflows, constraints, and opportunities for improvement. This role is critical in ensuring timely, accurate reporting to investors, equity partners, and lenders, while fostering a collaborative relationship between finance and operations.

Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee all property-level and consolidated accounting, budgeting, and cash management.
  • Personally manage at least one property’s books to maintain a grounded perspective in day-to-day operations.
  • Ensure GAAP compliance, timely month-end and year-end closes, and proper reconciliations across all entities.
  • Supervise and mentor 10 Financial Administrators, promoting efficiency, accuracy, and accountability.
  • Lead and support audits (all properties are audited annually) with firms such as Novogradac and CohnReznick.

Investor & Lender Relations

  • Prepare and deliver timely financial reports to banks, investors, equity partners, and Housing Authorities.
  • Ensure compliance with reporting requirements under management agreements and funding structures.
  • Engage directly with lenders and investors as needed to maintain confidence and transparency.

Compliance & Audit

  • Maintain audit-ready records across the multifamily portfolio.
  • Ensure compliance with LIHTC, HUD, tax credit programs, and other affordable housing requirements.
  • Partner with Risk Management on insurance and liability policies.

Leadership & Execution

  • Lead by example as both a strategic advisor and active contributor.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline reporting processes and enhance financial controls.
  • Oversee the effective use of financial systems (Yardi, Resman) to improve accuracy and efficiency.

Strategic & Development Support

  • Review financial structures, partnership agreements, and loan closings as needed.
  • Support acquisitions and development projects, including financial due diligence and funding requisitions.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA strongly preferred).
  • Experience:
  • 7–10 years of progressive financial leadership.
  • Multifamily property management experience
  • Affordable housing/tax credit exposure (highly preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, audits, compliance, and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency with property management and accounting systems (Yardi, Resman).
  • Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution.

Culture & Fit

  • Collaborative and approachable: able to build strong partnerships with their team, operations, HR, and leadership.
  • Hands-on and detail-oriented: willing to dive into the books and processes personally.
  • Positive and adaptable: energetic, humble, and solutions-oriented.
  • Team-focused: a mentor and coach to staff, fostering a culture of accountability and efficiency.

Please note: Applicants for employment in the U.S. must possess work authorization that does not require sponsorship for a visa now or in the future.
